Achieve More with Joomla! 3.5

Joomla! 3.5 released! Update your website to Joomla! latest version with new great features. DO MORE with Joomla! 3.5!

Do more with PHP 7 Support

PHP 7, released in November 2015, will provide a significant performance boost to your website. Many web hosts already provide this as an option in your hosting account and it is highly recommended that you enable it.

Quoting the PHP 7 release note on Zend, “ This is the most important change for PHP since the release of PHP 5 in 2004. … You can expect to see up to 2x faster performance and 50% better memory consumption than PHP 5.6, allowing you to serve more concurrent users without adding any hardware”.

Adding support for PHP 7 has caused a minor backward compatibility break but no major impact is expected from this. You can read more about this change here.

Do more with Update Notifications via Email

Keeping Joomla! up to date is essential to maintain security and stability. Now your Joomla! website will check for the availability of new Joomla! versions and when one is found it will send the Super Users on the site an email notification.

Do more with System Information Export

When you need support you will often be asked to provide your full system information. Now all the required information is just one click away and free of any sensitive information.

Do more with Drag and Drop Images

Adding an image is now as easy as dragging and dropping it from your computer directly into the content. This works anywhere that you are using the default TinyMCE WYSIWYG editor.

Do more with Anonymised System Data

In order to better understand our install base and end user environments, this plugin has been created to send some stats back to a Joomla! controlled central server. The plugin will anonymously collect only the PHP, Database Type and Version and Joomla! Version a site is running. No identifying data is captured at any point and you can see exactly what information is being sent in the plugin configuration. This will help us to make more informed decisions about which platforms we need to support, minimum version requirements, the pace at which we can encourage people to upgrade, etc.

The privacy of all Joomla! users is important to us and we want to allay any fears that we are collecting personally identifying information. The source code for both the plugin and the server code that gathers the data can be seen in our GitHub repositorieshttps://github.com/joomla-extensions/jstats-serverandhttps://github.com/joomla-extensions/jstats-plugin. Only statistical results extracted from the data will be published on the developer.joomla.org website.

Do more with Easily Insert Modules in Articles

If you want to add a module into an article, Joomla! 3.5 makes it really easy with a button directly on the editor toolbar. You don’t need to learn any syntax or remember the module details as the user interface does it for you.

And even Do More…

Easier Customisation of Protostar Template

Now you can safely customise the Protostar template styling using your own user.css file. Any changes made to this file will not be overwritten on an update so you don’t have to worry about losing your changes.

Editor Buttons Now Added to the Toolbar

You no longer need to scroll down the page to find the “readmore” or “insert image” buttons. Editor extension buttons that used to be placed below the text area can now be found in the toolbar where they belong.

Content Status Reports

The Category Manager now displays the number of published, unpublished and trashed articles in every category. This will make managing the structure of your site easier and help to find unused categories etc.

More awesomeness with the 3.x series…

Please update your Joomla! to the latest 3.5 version for maximum used and efficiency, for more information on Joomla 3.5 please visit https://www.joomla.org/3

Interested In Customizing The Moodle Mobile App?

Sam Suresh, the CEO and Moodle Trainer at the Multimedia and Open Source Learning Centre in Malaysia, gave a presentation on how to customize the Moodle App – specifically for Branding and URL – at the iMoot 2015.

While customizing anything IT related takes a mixture of skill, passion and patience, Sam provides a good overview of entry-level practices that include:

  • An overview of the Moodle Mobile source code
  • An introduction to Github (the source code repository for open source apps) on how to log in, find the Moodle Mobile app, download and fork for your use.
  • How to brand the Moodle Mobile app
  • An overview/into to PhoneGap (a 3rd party, open source app creation tool)
  • How to compile and submit your app to the PlayStore (from Google) for release

Importantly, you won’t be changing the functionality of the Moodle Mobile app in this exercise, just the branding elements (graphics, name, etc.) and the URL.

Check out his entire presentation below:

Clearly, this process is not for Moodlers who are focused on delivering content as instructors, and providing the best learning experience for students (unless, like us, you lean towards uber-geek). Rather, this presentation is for those of us who like to dabble, or who have a real need for branding the Mobile app for your school or institution.

One very interesting part (for me) in the presentation is just looking over the Moodle Mobile development map as presented by Sam. It is always a good idea to have a sense of what is in store for the future:

Have you customized your Moodle App? Tell us your experience with this in the comments below!
